Putney Pond, Prospect, Kentucky
Putney Pond and Woodlands, as it is known today, has a rich history that dates back to the 1930s when Meade Babcock first purchased the land. Little did he know that his purchase would eventually become the crown jewel of Prospect’s parks.
Nestled in the heart of Prospect, Kentucky lies a serene oasis that has stood the test of time, evolving from a private retreat to a beloved public park.
Originally, Meade Babcock acquired the property primarily for hunting and fishing purposes. The vast expanse of wilderness provided him with an ideal setting to indulge in his passions. As time passed, the property changed hands, and in the 1950s, it fell into the possession of Betty and Moseley Putney.
This dynamic duo took on the challenge of converting an abandoned 150-year-old “Dog-trot” cabin into a charming three-bedroom home. With their impeccable vision and hard work, the cabin quickly transformed into a beloved destination for family and friends.
Tragedy struck in 1958 when the Putney family lost their eldest son, 1st Lt. Moseley L Putney Jr., fondly known as “Pete.” As a fighter pilot in the USAF, Pete tragically lost his life during a flying incident over Evergreen, Alabama.
In memory of their beloved son, the senior Putneys made a heartfelt decision to dedicate the pond to Pete and aptly named it Putney Pond. This act of love and remembrance added a new layer of significance and emotion to the already beautiful landscape.
Over the years, Putney Pond has continued to captivate visitors with its serene surroundings and ample recreational opportunities. It became a place where people could connect with nature, reflect on life’s wonders, and create cherished memories with loved ones. The allure of the pond grew, and it became evident that it had to be preserved for generations to come.
In 2008, the city of Prospect took a decisive step to ensure the preservation of Putney Pond and Woodlands. With the invaluable assistance of a grant from the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund, the city purchased the 25-acre tract, safeguarding this natural gem and turning it into a public park.
The acquisition was a testament to Prospect’s unwavering commitment to preserving green spaces and offering its community a place to reconnect with nature.
Today, Putney Pond stands as a shining example of Prospect’s dedication to staying green. Visitors to the park are greeted by enchanting woodland trails, which were once graced by the presence of the State Champion Kentucky Coffee Tree.
Though the title may have changed, the allure of these trails remains intact, inviting nature enthusiasts and hikers to explore the beauty of the woodlands.
The centerpiece of the park, of course, is the serene Putney Pond itself. Surrounded by wetlands, the pond is a tranquil oasis, perfect for fishing, bird-watching, or simply unwinding amid nature.
As the seasons change, so does the beauty of Putney Pond. In spring, vibrant blooms dot the landscape, and migratory birds grace the skies, creating a symphony of colors and sounds. Summer brings opportunities for boating and picnicking by the water’s edge.
In autumn, the foliage transforms into a breathtaking tapestry of reds, oranges, and golds, making it an ideal time for a leisurely stroll around the pond. Even in winter, when a blanket of snow covers the earth, the park exudes a unique charm, attracting visitors seeking solace and a connection with nature.
